OpenPLM is an open source PLM software. It is available Free for use under the GNU General Public License. It is a basic PLM application with Part Management, BOM Management, Document Management and support for CAD/CAM documents.

In this OpenPLM Evaluation Part 1 we will focus on basic functionalities using their Demo website for High Tech Industry
It features a simple user friendly login page. Apart from the login form it has 6 different language options. Thus it has localization support for major languages. Since this is a demo site we could not check the login page can be further customized.
The openPLM home screen is basic but it clearly places all the important links and navigation menus in the front so that they are easily accessible. Central to the Home screen is the search box where we can search for various objects. The navigations menus provide easy access to the task like creating objects, browsing existing objects, etc.
The home screen also gives us an option to change the language of the website. On top of the page there is a link to view the event timelines.
Event Timelines can be used to view the activity log of the user. It has several filter check boxes to enable quick filtering of the activity log. It is useful feature to for compliance and auditing needs.
Part and Document Creation
Create screen can be used to create Parts and documents. The Type Chooser has several part and document type and sub-types options. It is a dynamic type chooser with the contents being updated automatically.
The create form is dynamically updated as per the selected object type.
Object navigation is straight forward and simple in OpenPLM. There are simple navigation buttons that guide us though objects properties page, lifecycle page, revisions page etc. There is even a BOM-Child view and BOM Parents view to support the product structure requirements.
Overall this is a very basic but useful PLM application that can help small to medium scale companies to effectively manage their parts and specifications. Afterall anything that is free yet this good should be tried atleast once.
